New bodycam footage from the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office shows the tearful moments leading up to when a woman attacked and stabbed a deputy in the neck at the scene of a crash.

According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, 21-year-old Leigha Michelle Day is facing the charge of attempted premeditated first degree murder of a law enforcement officer.

The incident occured after investogators say Day crashed her car down an embankment when a uniformed patrol deputy, Dep. Cody Colangelo, rushed to help.

The deputy can be heard asking the woman, "What's going on?" as she walked the shoreline.

"I don't know," she replied. "Were you just in a crash?" the deputy asked.

That's when the sobbing woman began to walk the other direction, and Dep. Colangelo ordered her to hold on.

With her hands behind her back, the crying woman told the deputy she was scared, and he asked her to walk up the stairs. Moments after following his directions, the woman suddenly turned around, lunged towards the deputy, and stabbed him in the neck.

According to the sheriff's office, Colangelo fired his gun and Day ran from the scene.

While Colangelo held pressure on his wound, the deputy radioed for help and continued to search for the woman. Eventually, responding deputies found and arrested her.

Dep. Colangelo had to go under surgery as the knife nicked his carotid artery, but he has already gone home, and expected to make a full recovery.
