Household Hacks To Prepare You For Hurricane Dorian

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —While many are stocking up on food and water, there are even more things you can do right now to be as prepared as you can be ahead of Hurricane Dorian’s impact.

Here are a few handy hurricane hacks to help you get through the storm.

Washing Machine Cooler

Power outages can leave you in a warm house with no cold drinking water. You can use a washing machine as a cooler by filling it with ice and your favorite beverages.

Bathtub Full of Water

Fill your bathtubs with water.

In the evening your water goes out, you can use a bucket to scoop the water out, so you can flush the toilet, wash your hands or clean dirty utensils.

The drinks will stay cool for a few days and the ice will drain when it melts.

Ziploc Bags of Ice

Fill plastic bags with water and then place them in the freezer.

If the power goes out, the block of ice can help keep your food cold or you can always thaw the bags for drinking water.

The Penny Trick

This is a great tip for families who plan to evacuate.

Fill a cup with water, then freeze it. When it’s frozen, drop a penny on top of it. Put it back in the freezer. When the power comes back on, if the penny is at the bottom of the container, your freezer thawed completely and that means you need to toss your food.

Water Jug Light

Grab a flashlight or headlamp, wrap it around a gallon of water to light the room.

Free Waterproof Containers

Store your photo albums or important documents like your passport or medical records, in plastic bags. Store them in the dishwater to keep them safe.

Dog Potty Hack

Your dog will need to use the bathroom at some point during the storm.

Place grass or sod inside a children’s pool or plastic container to allow your furry friend to potty during the storm.
