Cynthia Erivo opened the 2025 Oscars with a performance that defied gravity.

On Sunday (March 2), Erivo took the stage to perform her rendition of “Defying Gravity” from her hit film Wicked. Erivo was joined on stage by her co-star Ariana Grande, who donned a red gown as she sang her part of the Wicked duet.

The stage lifted Erivo, who was wearing a white gown with floral detailing, as she belted out the lyrics from the movie’s soundtrack. The powerful performance garnered a roaring applause, a standing ovation, and even tears from attendees of the 97th Academy Awards.

Erivo and Grande’s duet came before this year’s Oscars host, Conan O’Brien, delivered his opening monologue. Ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, Wicked earned nominations in 10 categories, with Erivo earning a Best Actress nod.

Erivo, 38, could become the youngest person to ever earn the coveted EGOT, boasting an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and possible Oscar award if she wins on Sunday for her portrayal of Elphaba.

During Sunday’s ceremony, Grande also sang a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” before Erivo delivered a captivating performance of “Home” from “The Wiz.”

Other performances are expected from artists, including Doja Cat, Lisa of Blackpink, Queen Latifah, and Raye.
