Palm Tran Gives Homeless People Free Rides To Evacuation Shelters

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —Palm Beach County is making sure no one is left behind during the storm, especially those who are vulnerable and might have no place to go and no way to get there.

The county scheduled Palm Tran bus pick-ups on Sunday evening at various local parks including Currie Park, John Prince Park, Phil Foster Park and Jim Berry Park.

The goal was to get as many homeless individuals off the streets and into safe shelters as possible ahead of Hurricane Dorian.

Several people who took the ride told CBS12 News that without Palm Tran, they wouldn't be able to make it to the shelter and would have to ride out the storm on the streets.

"I'm so glad that Palm Tran reached out for the people that is struggling," Larry Clark said.

Clark has been living on the streets of South Florida for awhile, so he knows how difficult it can be to be outside during a hurricane. This time, he says, he's just grateful he has a way to get to safety

"Now, my game plan is just to stay alive. Other than that, I wouldn’t know what I would be able to do," he said.

Palm Tran is suspending all regularly scheduled service for Monday, Sept. 2, but will continue to make special trips to the following shelters:

  • Fairgrounds (Special Needs)
  • West Boynton Rec Center (Animal Shelter)
  • Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary
  • Independence Middle School
  • Lake Shore Middle School
  • Pahokee Middle School
  • Palm Beach Central High School
  • Palm Beach Gardens High School
  • Park Vista High School
