How To Prevent Getting Pickpocketed At SunFest

SunFest 2019 Day 1

CBS 12

Thousands of music fans will flock to Downtown West Palm Beach for SunFest this weekend!

Some of the big acts performing this year include Keith Urban, One Republic, Ludacris and Earth Wind and Fire.

While it’s a huge event for music lovers and the city, it’s also a prime time for thieves to prey on distracted fans.

A reoccurring issue each year has become stolen phones.

Last year, West Palm Beach Police say during the four day festival there were between 130 and 140 phones reported stolen or missing.

At least four people were arrested in connection to the crimes.

Officers say the criminals would bump into people, steal their phones, then put them on airplane mode or take out the sim card so they couldn’t be tracked.

Police say most of the phones were stolen from back packets; certainly something to keep in mind if you plan to attend Sunfest this year.

CBS12 is reaching out to the West Palm Beach Police Department for an update on their security plan for 2019, what if anything, they plan to do differently this year.

The four day music festival will go May 2nd through May 5th.
