Giant Hammer Stolen From California Community Center

Paul Bunyan has to be the number one suspect, right?

Healdsburg, California police say an 800-pound giant hammer set up as a public art installation was stolen by thieves last week from the lawn of the Healdsburg Community Center.

The hammer was part of a public art installation on loan from the Voigt Family Sculpture Foundation. The 20-foot-long, 1,000-pound structure was taken by the determined thieves sometime over night.

Police initially believed the theft might be related to a high school senior prank, but, after checking the local schools, and with no reported sighting of the hammer, police say they're stumped.

Artist Doug Unkrey, who created the sculpture, told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that it would take a flatbed trailer with a winch to move the 800-pound hammer.

"Why would you take this thing?" he asked. "Where are you going to put it?"

According to KTVU, the sculpture is worth $15,000. Unkrey has offered $1,000 for information that leads the the sculpture's return.

Anyone with information about the missing exhibit is being asked to call the Healdsburg police.
