Authorities say a West Palm Beach police officer is in on administrative leave pending an investigation into a fatal shooting during a confrontation with an armed man.
Police Chief Vince Demasi says Officer Christopher Nebbeling fired 12 shots after 24-year-old Demitri Polen pointed a rifle at him Saturday night.
Demasi says he has ``no doubt'' that Nebbeling feared for his life, noting the rifle Polen had was ``designed'' to kill people.
The Palm Beach Post reports the case will be reviewed by internal affairs and the state attorney's office.
Authorities say Nebbeling responded to a call of shots fired. Other officers told him to follow a vehicle, which eventually crashed. Nebbeling started toward the SUV and Polen pointed the weapon at him.
Polen later died at a hospital.
